A topiary different view of Multi plane.

It took Ben to point this out to me. I’d spotted it several times, but never associated it to the innovative technique used in the early animations

One of the techniques that was used was what became called Multi Plane. This technique used several layers to try and simulate real life motion when either panning or zooming in closer. The way this was achieved was by using several layers of animation. The back ground, mid ground and fore ground. By doing this the animators could move the fore ground a lot quicker than the background, which is what happens when you are moving, looking at scenery.

So in this photo below outside the Art of Disney Animation Building, you can see 3 layers of contoured hedges, with the characters based in the mid ground.

Thanks to Ben Debnam for the use of these photo.
