The time setting of Main Street’s Emporium is in the 1900’s. Obviously that is just the theme that is overlaid and not the role play too.

What I mean by this is that you are buying modern day items with modern day currency and facilities (chip and pin). In the UK there is an open air Museum called Beamish, which is themed and role played of that time period. One of the main working items in their shop is also installed in the Emporium.

Around the ceiling of the shop you will see cages and tracks snaking around. When the tracks were in operation the counter staff would write a receipt take your payment and bundle it into a capsule / ball. Hoist it up onto the track to where it would roll around the system and end up in the cashiers office. The Cashier would check the receipt and issue the correct change, load it back into the ball and roll it back to the counter. Obviously back in the day the counter staff weren’t to be trusted with money. Either their fingers were sticky or their mathematics may have let them down.

 O Emporium da Main Street remonta ao século XX. É óbvio que isto é apenas a decoração, não à todo um “jogo de personagens” à volta disto.

O que quero dizer com isto, é que sempre que compras algo é algo actual, pagas com dinheiro actual ou com uma facilidade actual (cartões de crédito/débito). No Reino Unido, há um museu a céu aberto chamado Beamish, que não só tem a temática mas também o tal “jogo de personagens” da mesma época. Um dos muitos instrumentos de trabalho das lojas desse museu também está presente no Emporium.

No tecto da loja verás gaiolas e faixas por todo o lado. Quando essas faixas estariam a funcionar, os funcionários escreveriam uma espécie de receita onde diziam o valor que terias de pagar e colocá-lo-iam numa cápsula. Essa cápsula seguia pela faixa até à caixa registadora. O cobrador iria pegar na receita e assegurar que o pagamento e o troco eram feitos correctamente, colocando tudo isto de novo na cápsula, que voltava ao seu local original. Na altura, os funcionários não eram de confiança com o dinheiro. Talvez os seus dedos fossem pegajosos ou a matemática não fosse a melhor…
